The Splendid Sampler - a 2016 mystery quilt-a-long by Pat Sloan & Jane Davidson at splendidsampler.com. Every week 2 - 6" block patterns would appear on their website by over 80 different on-line designers. I do not think they missed a quilting technique - paper piecing, hand & machine appliqué, embroidery, etc.

I used Miniature Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings fabric.

There are 110 blocks featured - the 100 mystery & 10 bonus blocks. I used left over fabrics to back it and rented the long-arm at Cedar House to quilt it.

It finished at 88" x 96" and is on the spare bedroom downstairs.

I do not think I will be doing another quilt like this or this size again.Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-75976748670313666352017-11-09T17:23:00.004-06:002017-11-09T17:23:55.285-06:00Project 48 Quilt

2016 BOM Project 48 - for project48.com

This was a mystery quilt-a-long. Each week 2 - 9"-block patterns were featured on their website, for 24 weeks. They featured every type of quilting - appliqué, hexagons, etc. I used material only from stash and early on decided I would do diagonal rows with a colour theme - blue, brown, green yellow, pink, purple, red, turquoise, orange. It finished at 63" x 84". I backed it with white with yellow stars flannel and bonded it with striped fabric.

This was the first quilt I rented a long-arm to finish it. It presently resided in the cottage at Hecla.Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-88449772198317771512017-11-09T17:09:00.000-06:002017-11-09T17:09:30.622-06:00Andrea's 30th birthday quilt
My daughter, Andrea, turned 30 on June 15, 2017. I decided to make her a quilt for this occasion.

I started in January 2016 with BOM Dear Daughter with RebeccaMayDesigns.com. I used mostly fabric I had. It consists of 12 blocks - machine & hand appliqué - words of encouragement, etc.

It finished at 72" x 90" and I backed it with grey flannel. I free motioned quilted it - took forever.

Her dad & I drove out to see her in June for her birthday with this quilt and her 30-year photo book I created of her first 30 years! My brother-in-law, Frank, has not been feeling well - lungs, heart, etc and he is always feeling cold. I decided to make him a warm lap quilt for when he lies on the couch. I had bought this material when Don & I traveled to Florida, and it seemed to be calling his name.

This is Pacific Reflections, a Cindi McCracken Design - pack of 2.5" batik strips - design features 2 blocks: light block with medium/dark centre & dark block with light/medium centre. It was 58" x 60".

I rented the long-arm quilting machine in Lockport and backed it with minky (for warmth). I also sewed up a pillowcase in matching colours.

I gave him the quilt the end of October 2017 - hopefully he is actually using it!
I wanted to learn how to applique better & found this quilt - My Whimsical Garden by Piece o'Cake in 2014. Using my stash I worked on it and finally finished it in 2016. I had entered it in the Gimli/Interlake Quilt Show in August 2016 and finished it 2 days before the show!

I machine pieced, hand appliqued, and free motion quilted the top (edging in the squares and pebbles in the border. I received 2nd place for People's Choice Award & $50 gift certificate at local quilt shop - very unexpected, but delightful!!

It measures 75" length x 65" width. It now hangs in our cottage in Hecla!Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-89892973792093824222016-09-12T14:31:00.003-05:002016-09-12T14:31:22.027-05:00Postmark'd Art 2016

These are the four postcards I completed for Round 25 of Postmark'd Art - No Theme/Summer

I had taken these photos with my macro lens and printed on fabric. Rather disappointed with the colour quality that came from the printing on fabric - will have to work on this, if I do it again.
The Splendid Sampler group started January of 2016 - goal is 100 6.5 inch blocks. We receive the instructions for a block on Sunday & Thursday - no idea what the design will be. There are 85 designers from around the world designing for this group. There have also been 6 bonus blocks provided.

So are there are over 10,000 people signed up to do this quilt - Facebook and their website are places to upload pictures of completed blocks.

Above is 20% of my quilt so far - 20 of the blocks, not the bonus or additional.
I used the designs found in a book on sewable
Zentangles. They were fun to make - although my
Signed up for the postcard exchange again this season at Postmark'd Art. These are the three postcards I had to make - this theme was Crazy Quilts.

Very glad I only had to make three as they took a lot of work!! But it was enjoyable work - always wanted to make a crazy quilt - maybe when I have time this will entice me to try one.

Two of these went overseas - one to England & one to Wales.

It was Brenda's 65th birthday December 31st so I decided to make her some mugrugs. Had the embroidery patterns from Jacquelynne Steves for Cozy Afternoon Quilt (which I have not yet made, & may not…). So I used these two patterns and fabric leftover from United Stitches. Jacquelynne was also having a contest using these patterns - I entered and received 3rd place.

I also gave 2 white mugs to go with the mugrugs. Snow came & decided to finally finish the SnowPeople Table Runner - from Bird Designs. Machine sewn, hand embroidered & big stitching quilting around the edge, using Presencia #8 thread.

The first theme was Sunset/Sunrise

I sewed think strips of material - was a little tricky to get the oranges to sew in correctly! I only had to create and exchange 3 & they were well received!

(pictures will not upload - will try later…_

The next theme I entered was Dragonfly (my favourite theme…)

These are two of the cards I created - I did 12 - 6 for the postcard exchange and 6 to hopefully sell at the art gallery.

I thread painted the wings one afternoon - water soluble stabilizer & tulle.

Another day I finished the postcards - I sewed bullion knots for the dragonfly body and 2 green beads for the eyes. I must say they are very cute! I had to mail them using clear cello envelopes to protect the wings.

I loved working with the wool and learning and stitching all those lovely embroidery stitches.

We were not allowed to show our work until this May - we had to wait until Sue put the quilt package up for sale on her website.

Below is the drawing that we were given at the beginning of January 2014 - I have not finished the top quilting yet, but I have inserted the final top before quilting. I have also put each of the months blocks as I finished them. I think I may have to find a long arm quilter to quilt the top - I hate to do it, but I do not want to ruin my hundreds of hours of work!

I really enjoyed this BOM and I am now working on the 2015 BOM.
Christopher & Jamie finished Gwen's bedroom & she was able to sleep in her own room. Jamie had picked the theme Owls for her room, so I was finally able to make a baby quilt for her.

The quilt finished at about 45" x 54".

Finished this Hearts & Stars quilt in January. It was a Craftsy course by Anne Petersen called Continuous Line Quilting. I had gotten the course and material in 2014 and finally got around to getting it done.

The materials was Kaffe Fassett Shot Cotton - different and I used various variegated threads on the front to complete the free motion quilting and just one variegated thread on the back.

It finished at 40" x 45".Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-59044281713645645972015-04-08T12:19:00.001-05:002015-04-08T12:19:55.355-05:00Candle Mat Swap

Quilting Group had another quilting swap this past quarter - this time it was a Friendship Candle Mat Swap. Michele Foster provided the group with two designs & we were to choose one and send it. I also made two coffee mats & two wine coaster to match - I had also included some candles & Canadian souvenirs. (I had forgotten to take a picture of the back this time…)
Because I cannot post the finished picture of "In Bloom" - Sue Spargo's 2014 BOM (everyone who signed up for the BOM had to sign an agreement that we would not post any pictures of it until Sue has published the pattern - probably not until May 2015), I will definitely show my progress on Sue Spargo's "Butterfly Sampler" that I signed up for at Craftsy.

She goes over all the stitches in her lessons that a person could use & she provides the butterfly template - the rest is up to you. I had to decide what colours, fabrics, felts, shapes for each butterfly. I also had to decide which threads and embroidery stitches I wanted to use. I drew and wrote down for each butterfly a 'master' plan. So far I have appliquéd the felt and fabrics on each butterfly. I had started to just do one butterfly from start to finish - but that was taking too long & getting too confusing. So I decided to plan it out, appliqué all of them and then complete the embroidery work on each one.

So far I am pleased with the progress...Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-63788596196083065422015-01-11T17:39:00.003-06:002015-01-11T17:41:23.994-06:00Postcard Swap

These are the 4 Music themed postcards I was to make for the swap. Again they are 4" x 6" and they are all going to the USA. I decided to use some of the foil I had to make the shapes - didn't turn out 'too' bad - I need to work on applying the foil glue straighter.
This is the second round of Mug Rug Swap - through Quilting Gallery Swaps. Mishka's Playground designed 6 mug rugs using the title 'Little Gems' to choose from - these are versions #4 & #5. They are for my partner is Louisiana, USA.

They measure 6.5" x 10.5" and they are to be used as a placement for your coffee (or tea) mug. She liked the colours red & yellow - so I hope she likes them. I have to gather some goodies to send in the package & mail it on Monday.

I also sent Amy a yellow fat quarter, some Gimli postcards, a Canada wine identifier and a package of 'building a snowman' buttons I had - I put them in a Canada bag.
I became involved with Postmark'd Art - a postcard swapping group. I enjoy doing fabric postcards - but I do not wish to sell them and my friends and relatives may be getting tired of receiving them - so I joined this group. I signed up for 2 themed groups (there were a few choices) - Winter and Music. These are my 5 fabric Winter themed postcards that I am mailing out in a few days - 4 go to the USA and 1 goes to Wales, UK. The object is to get 5 Winter themed cards back. This is Round 21 for this group.

They measure 4" x 6" - I embroidered the snow people. It was fun & I hope they get to their destinations, unharmed, and on time.

I now have to create 4 Music themed postcards ...

I had started this wall hanging in January 2014 - hoping to get it finished before spring - but then we went away for 5 weeks! In December 2014 I decided to finish it for Christmas - but I ran out of the quilting thread (I used too much I guess). So I ordered another spool (1000 m!), thinking maybe I'll get it finished for Christmas 2015…

The thread came and I finished it New Years Eve day - so I officially finished it in 2014!!

I saw the quilt and instructions at www.christaquilts.com - a lesson in free motion quilting. It measures 43" x 50" when finished. It looks great hanging in our entryway - it is crooked here as the nails need to be even. It is ALL free motion quilted!! It took 1.5 spools of 1000 m thread to complete it. The bottom quilting is mini fans - used to represent snow drifts. The middle quilting is pebbles - used to represent snowballs. There are also snowflakes and a star on top of the tree; plus the words Peace, Noel and Joy. The top quilting is spirals or swirls - used to represent the wind and sky.Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4941156678327109735.post-4664959689114278922015-01-01T11:25:00.002-06:002015-01-01T11:25:55.594-06:00Zentangle

I needed a card for my friend's 64th birthday & I decided to try one by doing Zentangle! The process is rather mediative and I had to stop myself from overdoing it. Not too bad for my first attempt - she seemed pleased with it...Debbie's Doingshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628965285439075333noreply@blogger.com0
